In 1994, a first gathering of about twenty women met at Alice Bianco's home in Darien to share their experiences as Deaf and hard-of-hearing women. The themes discussed including Leadership, Sexuality, Mental Power, and Women's Health.
Our former CT Chapter-DWU hosted a New England regional conference, later renamed as Northeast Deaf Women's Conference, on April 9 - 11, 1999 at the Holiday Inn Select in Stamford. Our conference theme was a "Woman's Passage to Wisdom".
In 2004, we changed the name of this organization, Deaf Women United - CT Chapter to Deaf Women of Connecticut or DWC. In recent years of DWC, we have hosted several workshops, and many events including hiking and summer picnics.

In 2005, DWC launched a new website which included quarterly newsletters and email distribution. Email is distributed by use of a marketing tool called Constant Contact.
Since November 2006, DWC enjoyed its first tea party in Darien and plans to continue hosting future tea parties.
DWC decided to host its first annual Deaf Women's Day Luncheon on January 13, 2007 in honor of deaf female leaders for their beliefs, values and willingness to volunteer and participate in any various organizations for the causes. The event's theme was "Deaf Women's Cup of Tea". Sue Pedersen was a keynote speaker at the luncheon and at the same time Vikee Waltrip, deaf woman comedienne was invited for performance for the rest of the afternoon.
Sue Pedersen received Deaf Woman of the Year 2007 award as presented by DWC. The gift for the award was a shining beautiful silverware, named as Magnolia Clutch Tray manufactured by Arthur Court.

The goal of our organization, DWC is to encourage Deaf, hard-of-hearing, late-deafened and deaf-blind members to network and provide social opportunities for continued personal growth. We aim to communicate and support each other through social gatherings, email, and the DWC website. |
